Bangkok – Jungle Bicycle Tour
A green salient on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River punches deep into the Yannawa and Phra Khanong districts of Bangkok. Looking like a large coconut grove amidst the urban sprawl, this is Bang Kachao. Hidden from view by the palms and criss-crossed by waterways and lanes, serene village-like communities nestle against the frenetic metropolis. We ride about 25 kilometres in total. The ride starts on Sukhumvit Road and there is a short section in the city before we cross the river. Then enter Bang Kachao district and cycle beneath the lush foliage passing temples, gardens, schools and markets, including the floating variety. The pace is relaxed and stops are made for explanations of customs, history and culture – and to allow time for everyone to catch up. The tour concludes where it began.
Duration of tour: 3 hours 45 mins
Includes: Bicycle and helmet, accident insurance, water and snacks, English speaking guide.
Chiang Mai – Private City Tour and Temples
A tour of Old Chiang Mai and its graceful Lanna style temples. King Mengrai founded the old city of Chiang Mai in 1296 with the full name of Nopburi Sri Nakawan Ping Chiang Mai. It formed the core of his kingdom of Lanna, which fell to the Burmese in 1556. It came once again into Siamese control in 1775 as a semi-independant state and did not fully come under Bangkok rule until 1938. This long and varied history is evident within the old town walls. Chiang Mai counts over 300 temples – during the tour entrance is limited to a couple of salient ones. Wat Phra Singh is the largest and containing several fine woodcarved buildings. Wat Chedi Luang was a former home to the Emerald Buddha. The chedi used to stand 90 metres and is now being restored after the earthquake of 1545 that cut it down to its present size. Graceful Wat Chiang Man is the oldest of the temples, once home to King Mengrai. Wat Suan Dok is the royal funery temple. The tour also includes a visit to local fruit market and handicraft village.
Duration: 3 hours 30 mins
Includes: Transportation by air-conditioned vehicle with local guide, visits to Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Chiang Man and Wat Suan Dok, local fruit market and handicraft village.
