Create your own Japan Cultural Highlights experience. Our suggestion includes four nights in key cities of Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo.
This is a country that has much to offer in the way of tradition and culture. Japan is one of my favourite destinations for so many reasons – the intricacy of its food and how it is presented, age-old customs, castles, temples, the diversity and most of all the very humble, polite people.

JR Rail Pass
Explore ancient temples, traditional culture and Japanese cities with your Japan rail pass (JR pass).
Visit popular cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe, or explore the beautiful regional areas where you’ll find the attractions of the Gero Hot Springs, Nagoya Castle, Kenroku-en Garden, Mt Fuji and Himeji Castle (also known as ‘White Heron Castle”).
High speed and safety are features of the Japan railway network where 300 km/h Shinkansens (bullet trains) connect Tokyo with Japan’s major cities at intervals of approximately 15 minutes. Long distance trains provide convenient access to all parts of Japan.
The Japan Pass cannot be purchased in Japan. This pass is true value for money so purchase this pass and discover Japan by rail.
The Japan Rail Pass is not valid for NOZOMI and MIZUHO trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines. There are other Shinkansens that travel on these lines and you can use your Japan JR pass for these trains.
Kyoto Cycling Tour
Discover the real Kyoto while cruising the streets of Japan’s cultural capital. Make like the locals and jump on a bike to discover it all. Start the day cycling along the Kamo River, taking in the views of the city’s downtown. Call by the Heian-Jingu Shrine, built in 1894 to commemorate the 1,100 anniversary of the foundation of the capital. Next, weave along the quaint canals to reach the impressive Nanzenji Temple. Admire the temple’s spacious grounds and gardens, with the Higashiyama Mountains as their impressive backdrop. This is one of the most important Zen temples in all of Japan. Cycle down the most popular walking path in Kyoto, the Path of Philosophy, shaded by hundreds of cherry trees. It’s also a great place to contemplate the tranquillity and beauty of the area. Cycle back towards Kyoto Station, stopping by the World Heritage listed Shimogamo Shrine en route to see its unique forested setting that was preserved during the modernisation of the city.
Kyoto Maiko Dinner Tour
This tour will take you to a local restaurant to enjoy the exotic dances of Maiko girls. A “Maiko” is an apprentice of a “Geisha”. These are professional female entertainers that perform traditional Japanese arts at banquets. These include playing instruments, singing and dancing. After the Maiko show, you will have a delicious Japanese style dinner.
Kyoto Kimono Experience and Gion Walking Tour
Meet your tour guide at the lobby of New Miyako Hotel and head to Yume Kyoto House by bus. You can choose a kimono out of around 200 sets, and get your hair-styling done by a professional stylist. Try on an authentic kimono (yukata in the summer) and Japanese traditional hair style. Then go out and stroll around Gion around one hour, the traditional entertainment district of Kyoto, while wearing the kimono or yukata. Gion developed as a major hanamachi (entertainment district with maiko girls and geiko women) in Kyoto and still keeps the elegant and refined atmosphere of old times. There is no better place than Gion to take pictures in a kimono or yukata. The tour disbands after you return Kimono ( or yukata) to Yume Kyoto House in Gion area.
Tokyo Tsukiji Outer Fish Market and Sushi Workshop
The largest marketplace in Japan, Tsukiji is busy and bustling even before the sun comes up. The items lining the outer market are all for restaurant business as they prepare ingredients for the day’s menu. This area has many specialty shops selling seafood and fish eggs as well as kombu (seaweed), dried bonito, groceries, delicacies and more . Try your hand at sushi-making using seasonal seafood ingredients. This fun workshop is led by a sushi chef who teaches participants how to make sushi. There is no drop-off service to hotels after the tour ends. Please head to your next destination on your own.
