Relax where art meets science and learn how wine evolves from vine to glass. Travel through the country’s oldest winemaking road and taste award winning wines from the acclaimed Gimblett Gravels area. Learn about Wine & Food Matching while indulging in a platter with the finest local produce such as meats, cheese, marinated vegetables, breads, dips and more. Your Wine and Gourmet Odyssey tour will include wine tasting at 4-5 wineries, gourmet platter at a top winery restaurant, sightseeing with fully guided commentary and learn how wine evolves from the vine to the glass. A Hawke’s Bay Getaway wouldn’t be complete without a little wine tasting!
GANNET SAFARIS OVERLAND TOUR: Your guided tour will take youover Hawke’s Bay’s Cape Kidnappers station in 4WD coaches to the Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony, which is the largest accessible mainland colony in the world! Tours operate only between September and April, whereby you will be able to witness up to 20,000 gannets nesting and carrying out their daily routines. Be impressed by their two metre wingspan as you have the opportunity to stand quite close to the birds at 100 metres above the ocean at cliff edge. Your tour requires no walking, with your 36km roundtrip including a commentary en-route with an insight into the Cape Kidnappers Station, the sanctuary, local Maori legend and introduction to the gannets. Day 1: Arrive at Hawke’s Bay airport – Napier – Havelock North
Collect your rental car at Hawke’s Bay airport and drive to Napier, acclaimed as the ‘Art Deco Capital of the World’. Rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake, explore this city with its art deco architecture abound on a self guided walking tour.
Drive along Napier’s Marine Parade and through the township of Clive before reaching Havelock North village. You may wish to wander the village with its boutiques, providores and book stores or lunch in a cafe if you had not done so already in Napier.
Drive up the winding road to Te Mata Peak where you will be rewarded with stunning views out to the Pacific Ocean and across to the ranges.
Head over to Arataki Honey where you can sample a variety of honeys and watch the bees in action.
At the end of a wonderful first day, arrive at your accommodation where your hosts will be ready to welcome you. Delight in your 3-course Epicurean Dinner at Millhills Lodge, a great way to start your Hawke’s Bay Getaway. (D)
Day 2: Birdwoods Gallery – Ormlie Lodge
Morning tea to be enjoyed at Birdwoods, just 3km from Havelock North Village. Traditional plunger coffee and tea served just as Grandma used to, with fine china and sugar cubes. Take the time to stroll in the sculpture garden and gallery. Treat yourself to nostalgia in the Sweet Shop.
This evening, your two course dinner will be served at Ormlie Lodge, built in 1899 by William Nelson and gifted to his daughter Gertrude. Your dishes will be chosen by the chef and designed to be reflective of homestyle cooking in the grand lodge with its elegant, old world charm. (B/M/D)
Day 3: Wine tour
Spend the afternoon being introduced to food and fine wines locally produced on your Wine and Gourmet Odyssey Wine tour. Meet with winemakers, sample local produce and gain an understanding as to why the Hawke’s Bay region is so important in New Zealand’s wine production. (B/L)
Day 4: Gannet Safaris Overland tour – Afternoon high tea
You will be collected from the Havelock North i-site for your 3 hour Gannet Safaris Overland tour.Travel overland in air-conditioned 4WD vehicles right up to the Gannets at Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony.
Afternoon tea at Mangapapa. This experience was created for those that want to indulge and spoil themselves. With a range of freshly baked pastries, sweet treats and finger sandwiches, the High Tea is really, a very grand affair. (B/A)
Day 5: End of your memorable Hawke’s Bay Getaway
Relax this morning enjoying the serenity of Millhills Lodge before you return your rental car to the airport in preparation for your onward journey. (B)
